When growing squash, there are several key factors to consider. A healthy squash plant, like yellow squash, can yield anywhere from 5 to 15 pounds of fresh squash throughout the growing season, depending on growing conditions and care. With proper attention, you'll enjoy a bountiful harvest of crisp, flavorful squash ready for your meals!

Planting

Squash plants need full sun to grow properly, so choose a spot that gets at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.

Squash plants thrive in well-drained, fertile soil. Amending the soil with compost can help improve fertility and drainage.

Space plants about 24-36 inches apart to allow for proper air circulation and growth.

Water

Water regularly, especially during dry spells, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Squash plants love water, but they don't like their roots sitting in soggy soil.

Care During Growth

Apply mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture, keep weeds down and regulate soil temperature.

Squash are heavy feeders, so fertilize regularly with a balanced fertilizer or compost to encourage strong growth and fruit production.

Squash can attract pests like squash bugs, aphids and cucumber beetles. Regularly inspect plants and remove pests by hand, or use organic treatments as needed.

Harvesting Squash

Harvest when the squash is still young and tender, typically 6-8 inches in length. The skin should be smooth and glossy.

Use a sharp knife or pruning shears to cut the squash from the vine, leaving a small portion of the stem attached. Avoid pulling on the squash directly to prevent damaging the plant.

Pick regularly to encourage continuous production.

Post-Harvest Care

Summer squash is best used fresh but can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.

If you have an abundant harvest, consider freezing or canning squash to enjoy throughout the year. For freezing, slice the squash, blanch briefly in boiling water, then freeze in airtight containers.
